Google talks to dolphins: Google translator for animals

Google has taken a remarkable step towards understanding communication with dolphins. The DolphinGemma project aims to decode the complex sounds dolphins make to find out what they are saying to each other. Why is this topic so relevant? It shows not only how far advances in artificial intelligence (AI) have gone, but also how this technology can help deepen our relationship with other intelligent beings.

DolphinGemma, an AI model developed by Google, uses a wealth of data collected by the Wild Dolphin Project (WDP). Since 1985, researchers have been observing a group of Atlantic spotted dolphins to document their interactions and communication patterns. The aim is not just to hear the characteristic clicks and whistles, but to understand the meaning and structure of these sounds. One important aspect is that dolphins use specific "signature whistles" to identify themselves, similar to a name.

One of the challenges in dolphin research so far has been to put the occasional sounds into context. With the help of DolphinGemma, scientists can now recognize patterns and structures in dolphin calls. The model has been trained with acoustic data and can make predictions about the possible subsequent sounds in a sequence. This is similar to how language models for humans work, in which the next word in a sentence is predicted.

In addition to this approach, WDP is working with the CHAT system (Cetacean Hearing Augmentation Telemetry), which aims to create a simple basis for communication between humans and dolphins. This involves associating synthetic whistles with specific objects that attract the dolphins. In the long term, this could lead to a real interaction in which dolphins learn to use specific sounds to express wishes.

In my opinion, the idea that we can enter into a dialog with another species is incredibly exciting, but of course it also raises ethical and philosophical questions. How do you interpret the thoughts and desires of a being that has a completely different perception of the world?

In summary, DolphinGemma and similar projects give us an exciting glimpse into the future of interspecies communication. We are on the cusp of a new understanding and respect for intelligent life forms in our oceans. As we learn to understand the sounds of dolphins, we should also realize that we will not only be listeners, but also teachers in this relationship. This opens up exciting possibilities for further exploration and mutual support between humans and dolphins.
