Meta, the company behind WhatsApp, has recently launched its AI-powered assistant, Meta AI, in Europe. This new feature allows users to interact directly within WhatsApp with an artificial intelligence that offers a wide range of functions. Meta AI is a chatbot based on the "Llama" language model that responds to text input in a similar way to other AI-powered assistants. Users can ask questions, search for information or hold simple conversations. The assistant draws on real-time data from search engines such as Bing and Google to provide precise and up-to-date answers. Meta AI significantly expands the functionality of WhatsApp. Key features include:

  • Question answering: Whether it's general knowledge questions or specific queries, Meta AI delivers fast and accurate answers, as you would expect from LLMs like ChatGPT.
  • Image editing: Users can edit images by removing backgrounds or replacing objects. This function is currently available in English and will gradually be extended to other languages.
  • Integration in group chats: Meta AI can be activated in group chats by entering "@MetaAI" to clarify common questions or enrich discussions.

As soon as the feature is activated in WhatsApp, a blue circle appears in the chat overview. Tapping this icon takes you to the AI function. Alternatively, the command "@MetaAI" can be used in group chats to integrate the assistant.

This also leads us to the criticisms of this technology. One of the main advantages of WhatsApp to date has been the security of user data thanks to end-to-end encryption. While users now have the choice of what they give to the AI, data from group chats, for example, is passed on without the consent of every member. All that is required is for one member of the group to use the function. Data sent to the model may also bypass the encryption described above. Although Meta emphasizes that only the messages sent to Meta AI are analyzed and the rest of the personal communication remains untouched, users should always be careful with their data and be aware of the potential risks.

The integration of Meta AI into WhatsApp offers users a variety of new possibilities, from quick information retrieval to creative image editing. While the features are promising, it's important to continually educate yourself about privacy regulations and use the technology responsibly. Personally, while I'm a big fan of AI, even I have to admit that this technology has its limited applications, and private communication with those around me is not one of them in my opinion.
