OpenAI pulls back on Cursor
OpenAI has notified SpaceX that it intends to wind down its contract to provide OpenAI models to Cursor, proposing November 12, 2026, as the shutoff date. The company says it is giving the maximum notice allowed under its contract so developers can retain access to its models through Cursor for as long as possible.
OpenAI said the decision follows concerns about whether SpaceX will use its technology in accordance with OpenAI’s terms of service. The company pointed to its experience with Elon Musk’s companies violating contractual terms as part of the reason it cannot be confident about future compliance.
For large partners such as SpaceX, OpenAI typically uses custom contracts that set requirements for compliance with its terms of service and for integrations to support safety at scale. OpenAI said that after Musk acquired Twitter, now part of SpaceX, the company violated the terms of its contract. It also cited Musk’s admission under oath earlier this year that xAI, which is now part of SpaceX, had violated OpenAI’s terms of service. OpenAI noted that those terms are similar to terms used by xAI itself
The decision is also connected to a provision in OpenAI’s custom agreement with Cursor. According to OpenAI, the agreement provides a limited period in which it can cancel the contract following a change of control. The company said that as AI capabilities advance, it has a greater responsibility to ensure that its upcoming model, Astra, is used consistently with its terms.
OpenAI therefore decided to keep the contract in place until the latest date permitted while declining to provide future models to Cursor. This approach is intended to extend existing access for developers without committing OpenAI to supplying newer models under the agreement.
OpenAI said it has worked with Cursor for nearly four years and expressed respect for its team, product and contribution to the developer community. It also acknowledged that developers who depend on OpenAI models through Cursor will be most directly affected by the change. The company said it is prepared to provide additional support during the transition.
